MVD "To Do" List

I made a minimal effort to put these tasks in the order I think they will occur. There is a lot of information available on these problems on the MVD home page. If you click on the item in the "What needs to be done?" column, you will get a page which describes the problem in more detail.

What needs to be done? Notes Guestimated time for an experienced person to do it Could an inexperienced person do it?
Fix pedestal drift problem Pedestals drift on a few hour time scale, the changes may be sudden. We need to understand and fix this problem, it causes serious problems with zero suppression. At LANL and BNL. ~2 months? probably not
pedestal noise The pedestals are too wide. It seems to depend on cable length. (Probably) mainly at BNL. ~1 month? maybe
Signal/Noise The signal/noise is very poor in many channels, apparently because the noise is typical but the signal is small. Suspected cause(s) -- missing bias or clock timing off a tick. Mainly at BNL. ~1-2 months probably
Improve Glink reliability The main problems are probably in the TCIM. At BNL. Winter-Spring 2002. ~1 month?? Requires electronics skills
Try to fix broken DCIMs There are a variety of small problems (e.g. stuck bits) which are probably not design flaws, but bad solder joints, broken traces, etc. Probably at BNL. ~2 months Requires some electronics skills, patience, good eyes.
Make new C-cages There are many assembly, gluing, wirebonding, and testing steps involved. Should start late winter 2002. Some waiting is involved, so this is not a full time job. In Los Alamos. ~3.5 months. An inexperienced person could be trained to do some of this.
Program to manipulate serial strings Some work has been done already, but a much more user-friendly program is needed. Can be done anywhere. 1-2 months? Probably
Disassemble year-2 MVD and replace Al cooling tubes. Corroded Al tubes should be replace with Cu. Sometime in summer 2002. At BNL. 2 weeks An inexperienced person could help a lot.
physical sagging The MVD sags in the middle. This can be partly corrected in software, but we would like to minimize the problem. At BNL. ~2 weeks? probably
Reassemble year-3 MVD This is a two person job. Probably in mid-late summer 2002. At BNL. 1-2 weeks. At least one person should know how to do it.
Install year-3 MVD and test in place Installation takes ~1 day, testing takes as much time as is available. At BNL. few weeks Inexperienced people can help a lot
Cooling system hardware misc. upgrades, repairs, and improvements in the air and water cooling hardware ~1 month Probably
Cooling system software We want continuous monitoring of all cooling system conditions ~1 month? Probably
Improve and update MVD online software We have something, but the diagnostics could be improved and it will need to be updated for year-3. Some of this could be done outside BNL. ~2 months Probably
Connect and test spy lines Connect the spy lines (can look at linear signals which are selected by serial controls on our MCMs) to the module in the ancillary crate and test them. In the process, check all connections in ancillary crate. ~1 week Maybe
Define packet numbers for year-3 I like to do this myself, it is on this list so I do not forget. This effects the online and offline software. At LANL. a few days n/a
