EXTERNAL SENSOR INVENTORY,
SIGNAL DISTRIBUTION AND CABLING

new

28 Jan 99: changed the liquid flow sensors. This used to be 1 flow sensor, producing only 1 trip point. Changed to 2 sensors, providing 1 trip point and 1 analog out each.
19 July 99: The previous version was for 1/2 MVD in the full-scale mockup. I have now included all sensors on both halves, plus the chiller water sensors, and components for a third half-system to be available in the BNL clean room. 1 Feb 2000: The distribution boards got built; this fixed the pin assignments for the Relay Board.

There are a number of sensors around the MVD cooling systems.

For the whole system, that is 2 MVD halves plus sensors aroung the chillers we have:

total field sensors / channels: 26 114

All 114 channels are carried to the sensor distribution boards, but only a subset of those will be read out, and an overlapping subset will be used to switch the relay boards.

The 4.65 number coms from looking up the longest cable run from the motherboard to the rack, and subtracting 1m. In addition, we need 2 short 34-pin ribbons to go from the distribution board to the ADC module, and one short 40-pin ribbon from the distribution board to the relay board.

The sensor cables arrive at the ancillary crate, where some of the signals need to be routed to the relay board, and some to the custom ADC module. In addition, the sensor cables are also used to carry power from the crate to the field sensors. To route the signals and power in a well-organized, reconfigurable fashion, we need sensor distribution boards, as shown here:

Sensor Distribution Boards
These are the 'sensor distribution modules', two identical double-wide 6U VME board, with front panel assignment as indicated. The sensor names (Tx, Fx, Hx) correspond to the nomenclature on this schematic of the cooling systems.

All the details of the distribution boards are here.

For the '# of sets' (one set per MVD half) I assume we need to be able to provide services for 3 MVD halves (2 in the hall and 1 in the BNL cleantent), plus spares.

The ADC channels are in the table below. The order follows that of the sensor distribution boards. Since there are only 32 channels per side available, not all of the channels are read out - non-essential ones are dropped. A netlist is here.
