Overview
The Multiplicity Vertex Detector (MVD) of the PHENIX experiment provides event
characterization, a centrality trigger, the collision vertex position, and
measures fluctuations in the charged particle distribution. It is a silicon
detector system composing of two parts: two central barrels of silicon strip
detectors and two endcaps of pad detectors.
The central barrels have radii of 5 cm and 8 cm and a length of
64 cm, giving a single event coverage of 5 units in eta about midrapidity
for the inner barrel layer and 4 units for the outer layer. The barrels are
composed of 5 cm and 8 cm long strip (strip detectors) for the inner and
outer barrels respectively. The disk shaped endcaps, located at z position
of +/- 35 cm, reach a pseudorapidity of 2.7 for an event occurring in the
middle of the detector and are composed of pad detectors ranging in
size from approximately 2mm x 2mm to 4.5mm x 4.5mm.
