Since the studies described above were performed a decision has been at least tentatively made to use limited streamer mode detectors with signals taken directly from the detector anode wires instead of the arrangement of detector pick-up pads that were used in these simulations. This makes the usefulness of the results presented above somewhat problematic.
Nevertheless, some kind of Discriminant Analysis or Pattern Recognition algorithm may prove useful in discriminating against pions in the off-line analysis of experiments performed using the PHENIX muon arms. Hopefully these results will be useful in that regard.
