X-Ray studies of VTX StriPixel Stave

A visit was made to BNL Instrumentation to try and X-Ray one of the leaking staves removed from the outer barrel of the east detector (Stave ID?) by Y.Akiba, W.Sondheim, and E.Mannel, The X-Ray machine is designed for evaluating printed circuit boards and can accept objects approximately 1 inch tall, inches wide and of unlimited length. The field of view of the x-ray machine is approximately 1 inch in diameter with the capabilty to zoom in for higher resolution. The machine provides realtime images with the ability to capture static images.

The stave was passed through the field of view along the full length of the cooling tube by the Tech J, Triolo and observed by everyone. The resolution was varied at various points, no apparent breaks in the cooling tune were observed. Two images were taken at the "U-Shaped" end of the stave, one at maximum field of view and one zoomed in . Clearly visible in both images are the electrical connections between the tune and aluminum end piece.Images are somewhat blurred due to the lack of support at the far end of the stave due to the nature of the setup.

As a check, a small piece of tubing identical to what is used in the stave with a small hole in it was x-rayed. The first image shows the tube with the hole facing up. The tube was then x-rayed after being rotated 90 degrees: side view .

Special thanks to J.Mead and J.Triolo from BNL Instrumentation for the assisting with this investigation.
