2020 Physics/Theoretical Colloquium- VIRTUAL Thursday, August 27th , 2020 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. Speaker: Roger Wiens ISR-2: SPACE AND REMOTE SENSING LANL “Instruments for Planetary Exploration with the Perseverance Mars Rover and Beyond” Abstract: NASA's Perseverance rover, currently en route to the Red Planet, is tasked with exploring a new region of Mars and collecting samples for future return to Earth. Its instruments include the LANL-led SuperCam package, which will provide imaging, chemistry, mineralogy, and rock physical properties atremote distances. It will perform these tasks using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), time-resolved Raman and luminescence spectroscopy, visible and infrared reflectance spectroscopy, imaging, and acoustic sensing. LANL also contributed to the SHERLOC instrument, a fine-scale organics sensor on the end of the rover's arm. I will also describe our vision for future planetary instruments, potentially to explore Mars caves, Europa, Venus, and the Moon.
