2019 Physics/Theoretical Colloquium Thursday, April 25th, 2019 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. Rosen Auditorium (TA-53, Bldg. 1) Refreshments at 3:15pm Speaker: Irene Qualters ALDSC: Associate Laboratory Director for Simulation and Computation Los Alamos National Laboratory “The Next Quantum Revolution" Abstract: In a 1965 paper, Gordon Moore, cofounder of Fairchild and Intel, observed that the number of transistors per integrated chip was doubling every year and predicted that this trend would continue. This steady cadence has contributed greatly to the ubiquity and progress of computing. Now, however, physical limits have been reached, forcing research into fundamentally new and disruptive approaches. This is a high level perspective on opportunities and challenges in one such promising area.
