2019 Physics/Theoretical Colloquium Thursday, March 21h , 2019 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. Rosen Auditorium (TA-53, Bldg. 1) Refreshments at 3:15pm Speaker: Prof. Witold Nazarewicz Dept. of Physics and Astronomy and FRIB/NSCL Michigan State University “Excitement and Challenges in Nuclear Structure: Science of Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (a 30,000-foot view)" Abstract: The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at MSU will be a world-leading laboratory for the study of nuclear structure, reactions, and astrophysics. FRIB will be essential for gaining access to key regions of the nuclear chart, where the measured nuclear properties will challenge established concepts. Nuclear theory will play a critical role in providing the intellectual framework for the science at FRIB. The long-term vision is to arrive at a comprehensive and unified description of nuclei and their reactions, grounded in the interactions between the constituent nucleons. In this talk, advances in rare isotope research will be reviewed in the context of the overarching scientific questions.
