Jackson Senior Advisor for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Defense Intelligence Agency “ Dark Matters: How the Science of Diversity and the Diversity of Science Matter in Nuclear Science and Beyond" Abstract: As global migration, shifting demographics, and diverse populations grow, we face an extraordinary opportunity to tackle the universe’s most complex problems by optimizing scientific talent from around the world. Nuclear science, and the sciences writ large, have long been occupied by men and majority groups. As we aim to develop cutting edge energy solutions, protect our planet, defend our nation, and advance nuclear sciences, we must prioritize diversity, inclusion, equity, and accessibility as mission essential. Our most wicked problem sets require an extraordinary array of backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and expertise. If scientific institutions -- federal, academic, or industrial – could strategically transform their spaces into welcoming, affirming, inclusive, and equitable environments for all, our ability to carry out both domestic and global missions would advance exponentially. In this presentation, Dr. Taharee Jackson, Senior Advisor for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility at the Defense Intelligence Agency, will discuss what every member of the nuclear scientific community can do not only to embrace, but to exemplify outstanding DEIA practices at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and beyond.
