Subject: Re: Abstract for LANL urgently needed From: Ulrich Heinz Date: Mon, 7 Mar 2005 16:37:09 -0500 (EST) To: "Gerd J. Kunde" Lieber Gerd, Hier sind Title and Abstract: Title: "The Quark-Gluon Plasma at RHIC" Speaker: Ulrich Heinz, The Ohio State University The first three years of running at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) have produced a wealth of data. I will start by giving an overview of the experimental situation and then concentrate on two key observations which go qualitatively beyond what was seen at lower energy accelerators: the strong "elliptic flow" measured in non-central Au+Au collisions, and the observation of "jet quenching". I will show that the elliptic flow requires fast thermalization of the hot matter produced in the collision within less than 1 fm/c = 3*10**(-24) sec, followed by almost ideal fluid dynamic expansion. The initial energy density of this thermalized liquid is more than a factor 10 above the critical value for color deconfinement, and it lives for about 5-7 fm/c before beginning to form conventional hadrons. As predicted for the quark-gluon plasma, this matter also efficiently suppresses jets from hard-scattered partons: the observations are consistent with emission of hard partons only from a thin surface layer of the hot fireball, while anything that has to travel through the interior gets stuck and becomes part of the thermalized plasma liquid. I will also discuss several important questions which are still left open by the present data, and how to settle them experimentally. Finally, I will add my own two cents worth to the ongoing discussion about whether it is justified to call this new type of liquid found at RHIC a Quark-Gluon Plasma. Ist das ok?
