The subcritical experiment program at the Nevada National Security Site

ABSTRACT

Since the end of underground nuclear testing by the United States in 1992, subcritical experiments – involving plutonium driven by high explosives to extreme conditions – conducted at the Nevada National Security Site have been a vital part of the Science-Based Stockpile Stewardship Program. These experiments sit at the intersection of basic science and technology with national security needs. This presentation will review the goals of the subcritical experiment program, consider three subcritical experiments in greater detail, and discuss some of the exciting future capabilities now being planned.
