2018 Physics/Theoretical Colloquium Thursday, May 31, 2018 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. Rosen Auditorium (TA-53, Bldg. 1) Refreshments at 3:15pm Speaker: David Funk LANL, Weapons Program, ASD Project “Enhanced Capabilities for Subcritical Experiments (ECSE)” Abstract: In this talk, an overview of the ECSE portfolio will be presented. The portfolio includes a construction project (U1A Complex Enhancement Project; UCEP) to enhance the underground laboratory at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). It also includes the development of a new, multi-pulse accelerator (nicknamed Scorpius) under the Advanced Sources and Detectors Project (ASD) that will reside in U1a. The portfolio is rounded out with the ability to also conduct Neutron Diagnosed Subcritical Experiments (NDSE) within the underground laboratory. Each element of the portfolio will be discussed, with an emphasis on Scorpius, which is a multi-site collaboration (LANL, LLNL, SNL, and NNSS) for the development of the accelerator, that LANL is leading.
