The recently honored APS-fellow Dr. Steven R. Elliott from P-23 will be giving tomorrows P-25 seminar at 1 pm in A234: The Majorana Proposal The Majorana experiment is a proposed 76Ge-based search for neutrinoless double-beta (0n) decay. It will use 180 kg of segmented germanium detectors, enriched to 86% 76Ge, and in a close-pack configuration. Majorana is expected to reach an ultimate sensitivity to the 0n decay half-life of 5.5 x1026 years, corresponding to a neutrino mass of approximately 100 meV. The experiment is designed for easy expansion to 500 kg of Ge permitting a search for Majorana neutrino mass at the scale indicated by the atmospheric oscillation results. The basic design of Majorana will be shown, along with current development efforts, performance expectations, and background enumeration.
