DATA BASE(S)
Need to organize data produced in the various labs.
- retrieval, manipulation and display of data
- permanent archiving (as mandated by the Phenix contract with DOE)
Use 'local' product: FOXPRO
- easy to use for novices
- remote access can be done
- but, no free archiving
Use ORACLE under RHIC-wide licence
- cumbersome (?), but there is help (Mark Pollack, UT)
- web interface, as was done for EM
- archiving is automatic, since data physically reside at BNL
Footnotes:
- RHIC has an Oracle licence, purchased 3 years ago (50K). It is used by
PHENIX, STAR, PHOBOS, BRAHMS...
- PHENIX needs *some* Object-Oriented capabilities (ONCS), and other
subsystems have expressed interest (offline), because OO data bases may indeed
offer superior properties.
- There exist mixed OO/relational data bases from large vendors.
- A decision will be made in ~months, in coordination with RHIC and STAR.
- In any case, relational data will be supported.
