DATA BASE(S)

Need to organize data produced in the various labs.

• retrieval, manipulation and display of data
• permanent archiving (as mandated by the Phenix contract with DOE)

Use 'local' product: FOXPRO

• easy to use for novices
• remote access can be done
• but, no free archiving

Use ORACLE under RHIC-wide licence

• cumbersome (?), but there is help (Mark Pollack, UT)
• web interface, as was done for EM
• archiving is automatic, since data physically reside at BNL

Footnotes:

• RHIC has an Oracle licence, purchased 3 years ago (50K). It is used by PHENIX, STAR, PHOBOS, BRAHMS...
• PHENIX needs *some* Object-Oriented capabilities (ONCS), and other subsystems have expressed interest (offline), because OO data bases may indeed offer superior properties.
• There exist mixed OO/relational data bases from large vendors.
• A decision will be made in ~months, in coordination with RHIC and STAR.
• In any case, relational data will be supported.
