Corrosive Solder Flux

Grounding wires were soldered to a ground point at the foot of the bias connector. After this, increased leakage currents were observed in many wedges. The suspicion fell on the soldering flux that was used. (see for example this email exchange from March 2011.
In the spring of 2011, I prepared a PC board sample on which I had applied flux, in order to see if the flux or its residues would cause damage.
  • On the top location, I applied flux, and then wiped it off with tissue.
  • On the middle patch, I applied flux, and then put down a drop of solder.
  • The bottom patch shows flux that was left undisturbed.
Picture taken 26 October 2012. The sample shows that no corrosive damage occurs over a >1 year timescale.
