GETTING TO LOS ALAMOS

There is no public transportation from Albuquerque to Los Alamos. Los Alamos is about 100 miles from Albuquerque, and we recommend that you rent a car at the Albuquerque airport and drive to Los Alamos. We have a corporate rate with Budget, and the cost of a rental car with the Laboratory rate is less than $50. This is a rather moderate cost for the trip from Albuquerque to Los Alamos. If you don't want to keep the car while you are in town, you can return the car at the Los Alamos Airport. However, in this case you will want to arrange in advance to share a car with a colleague so you can get from your motel to the meeting site.

You should make your own reservations through Budget telling them that you are an "official" visitor at Los Alamos National Laboratory and give them the BCN number: T453800 and make sure that you DECLINE any extra insurance coverage (the laboratory carries insurance for official visitors). You will need a major credit card to rent the car. Please make your reservation with Budget well in advance, since they do not normally stock enough cars to supply last-minute reservations.

Matthias Burkardt (burkardt@dunkel.nmsu.edu) and perhaps a few others are going to make plans to be at the Albuquerque airport at specific times on their way from NMSU, and if you happen to arrive at the airport at the time they are there, they can give you a ride to Los Alamos. Burkardt is coordinating this, and I would suggest you contact him directly to find out the times he will be in Albuquerque. In any case, you should have a budget car reserved in case your plane is late.
