Intro and Physics
The Forward Silicon Vertex Detector (FVTX) for PHENIX will allow robust identification of
heavy-quark (charm and beauty) production in the forward
and backward rapidity regions in A+A, p(d)+A, and polarized p+p collisions. It provides new coverage
in the small-x region where gluon saturation is thought to be important and greatly extends the range
over which PHENIX can examine the gluon structure functions and their polarization.

FVTX DOE proposal, and the
NCC proposal, both submitted 3 March 2006.
- The current plan is to complete the proposal by mid February,
for BNL to get it to DOE before the March DOE retreat,
and then a BNL review in mid March will provide further input to DOE.
- DOE proposal final draft in
